Estate Planning for Families of Special Needs Children

Families with special needs children must exercise care in making their estate plans.  Whether their special needs child is still a minor or is an adult and particularly when the child is or may be in the future receive needs-based public benefits such as SSI or Medicaid.  While planning considerations for such a child will vary depending upon the child’s age, competency, and other family considerations the goal is to maximize independence and the ability to receive needs-based public benefits.  An explanation of the different estate planning tools for parents, grandparents, or relatives of special needs children will be presented.
